Zambian Short Term Missions (STM)

We pray that your experience in Zambia allows you to return to your Nation having blessed and having been blessed, and that you will be of greater value and service to the call of God To The Nations as a result.

  • ZAMBIA, THE PLACE, THE PEOPLE

THE PLACE.

From the southern shores of Lake Tanganyika in Northern Zambia to the shores of Lake Kariba; from the vast Barotse Floodplains to the rich wilderness of Zambia’s world renowned Luanga valley; from the sparkling waters of Lake Bangweulu and the endless surrounding wetlands to the spectacular beauty and abundance of the Busanga Plains in Kafue National Park; from the magnificent Victoria Falls to Zambia’s diverse cultural ceremonies… this is Zambia and this is the real Africa!

Zambia is fed and shaped by three great rivers, bordered by three massive lakes and big, big skies.

The legendary missionary, David Livingstone first saw the awesome glory of the Victoria Falls from Zambia.  His memory is enshrined in the nearby town of Livingstone and his heart is buried in this beautiful land

Zambia has one of the lowest population to land ratio’s in Africa.  Only 10 million people in a country half the size of Europe.  The employment opportunities offered in the post independence era in the copper mines and associated industries led to a strong rural-urban migration.  The result has been to make Zambia one of the most urbanised countries in Africa.  About one fifth of the population lives on the Copperbelt to the north of the capital, but the biggest concentration of people is in Lusaka itself with an estimated population of over 2 million.  This has resulted in massive tracts of uninhabited land across the country.

ZAMBIA THE PEOPLE

Nearly half the population of Zambia is under the age of 15 years with a high infant mortality rate of 92/1000 live births (1999 est.).  The average life expectancy is just 37 years.

Zambia is made up of 98.7% ethnic groups (Bemba is the predominant ethnic language), 1.1% European, and 0.2% other.

Most of the population (86%) lives below the poverty line.

  • MINISTRY BASE, MISSIONARIES

Short Term Mission

Global Care is able to provide people of a wide age range with a positive and life changing experience, which will broaden their horizons and missionary vision.

As a general rule it is intended that folk come in groups consisting of 6 people, as a cohesive unit, under the supervision of a recommended leader.

These field trips are not tourism ventures, though there will be the pleasures and thrills of overseas travel and the adventures of new experiences and places to visit.  It is expected that all team members are well known to their group leader

Missionaries

  • TRAVEL, MEDICAL, MONEY & LODGINGS

Travel

Flight costs can very.  Current estimates are between $2500 and $3000 ex Brisbane via Sydney or Perth to the capital Lusaka return.

Allow 2 weeks for new or renewing passports.  If you hold an Australian Passport you do not need Visas or entry permits to South Africa or Zambia.  Holders of Passports from other countries will need to check their position on this.

The teams will be met at Lusaka Airport and travel to Kabwe, 140 klms, 2 hours drive away.  (Sometimes there may be arrangements through Johannesburg where there are people who can assist as necessary).

Costs

Your daily cost  for s Short Term trip are between $200-$300 per week depending on the size of the group, these cost are generally all inclusive covering food accommodation and transport.

Medium (2-3 months) $600 per month.

However if you want to make the most of your African visit, side trips to some off the best Africa has to offer can be arranged at an extra cost. These costs do vary but arrangements can be made from budget – five star. (200 AUD^)

Money

The best way to “have money” is by credit card.  (VISA is the most common.)  You can insert your card into an ATM and get local currency in a jiffy. (Kwatcha is the local currency). Debit/Credit Card

There isn’t a lot more to spend money on in Zambia. Apart from the locally made wooden, clothing items on roadsides,

and at Victoria Falls. US Dollars is the currency accepted in most places – AUD is not. It is advisable to always have a few US$ in your pocket as some places may not take credit/debit card.

Medical

Vaccinations?    Yes!

You are requested to see your family doctor before travelling for a health check-up and to organise what other travel medications and vaccines they suggest to you as your family doctor. However we do suggest that you look at the effectiveness of all vaccinations. Talk to others who have been before.

There are a variety of Malaria tablets.  Most team members, to date, have used Doxycydine.

Lodgings

During outreach assignments food and lodging is covered.  Some supplementation would be advisable for us foreigners! (Muesli bars) There’s a Supermarket at Kabwe. Most western goods can be purchased there.

Groups will be expected to fit into existing accommodation arrangements.  Most of the time during your urban experience you will be billeted into other Christian homes. The Rural adventure will be camping of some description. What the people lack in facilities they make up in their friendship and their love for you.

  • Daily Activities

Simply, people on a short term mission’s trip get involved with what has to be done that day.

Tasks can vary from helping with transport, setting up Outreach equipment, repair and maintenance, construction as well as cleaning and packing up. Visiting the local orphanage, hospital is probably another activity.

We are interested in putting your gifts to work and seeing you operate in you passions.

Ministry wise, you will be involved by sharing your testimonies, sharing the gospel, praying for people, training, counselling, discipling and helps. Experience and prior training is not essential however we will send you a training manual, which you should go through, and if you have any question ask us or your Pastor.
